IODC 2016

The 4th International Open Data Conference, also known as IODC 16, was held in Madrid, Spain on the 6th and 7th of October 2016. Besides the two days of the official conference, 28 pre-events were held from the 3rd to the 5th, creating a weeklong open data celebration in Madrid.

Open Data for Open Government in Rural BC

In April of this year Canada’s Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) announced the results of the second competition for grants from the Community and College Social Innovation Fund (CCSIF). It was a day I had long been waiting for and when I got a text message from my Dean saying that there was some good news I could feel my heartbeat accelerate.

SGRC Forestry Projects

As Selkirk College began in abandoned buildings at Celgar, a pulp and paper mill in Castlegar, BC, it seems natural that many of the SGRC's applied research and innovation projects have been focused on geomatics in the forest sector.   Forestry companies and local BC government forest managers helped to develop the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) grant that founded the SGRC, and once the Centre was established one of our first projects was providing GIS support to the Kootenay Spatial Data Partnership (KSDP), comprised of forest harvest license holders and forest managers.
